composer Johan de Meij in Quebec city – August 2016

Thanks to the initiative of Twigg Music and four wind orchestras from Quebec city, we were fortunate to greet composer Johan de Meij inside the walls of the beautiful old Quebec this past week.

The performance of his works under his own baton at Palais Montcalm attracted many fans, including myself. All feeling thankful for your visit and your generosity in sharing stories with us, we will for sure remember this for a very long time.

La Musique du Royal 22e Régiment and violin virtuoso Alexandre Da Costa have shared the stage at “Festival classique des Hautes-Laurentides” on 22 July , and “Festival de Lanaudière” on 24 July 2016 !

What seemed to be at first, a very unusual instrumentation for a solo violin accompaniment, just turned out to be a fantastic idea !  With an obvious complicity between the soloist and the talented musicians of the Royal 22e Régiment Band, this challenging musical program really pleased everyone.  M. Da Costa and the musicians have received standing-ovations by a delighted crowd who wasn’t shy about requesting encores even before the mid-concert intermission.  Beautiful days, wonderful music, may this be only the beginning of a very long and great friendship !

Workshop at Philemon Wright Highschool

26 Feb 2016 – On my “to do” list today : a trumpet masterclass and a Wind Band Workshop with the young and talented musicians of Hadley Junior High and Philemon Wright Highschool

I noticed a few words on a wall as I am making my way to music room … “Work Hard, Be Yourself, Do the Right Thing” And this is exactly what the staff and students of this school are all about. I am so honoured that you’ve invited me for the day and so impressed by your work and dedication.  This very last school day before a well deserved spring brake was intense and rich with everything we have accomplished ! Big thanks to the two dedicated teachers who have organized the day , Chris Rusu and Tasha Ausman and all the best to the band program. You are absolutely fantastic !

18 Feb 2016 – A day with the “El Sistema” Saint-John, New-Brunswick program and Cpl Samantha Parent.

For who is not yet familiar with Sistema, it originates from Venezuela and is known as a transformational social change program and also for producing some of the best musicians in the world. Any child who comes through the door showing enough enthusiasm and commitment to learn gets the instrument of their choice and free instruction every weekday afternoon and Saturday mornings. The goal is social change, developing better citizens, primarily among economically disadvantaged communities, through the pursuit of musical excellence.

Samantha Parent, a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Master’s of Wind Conducting, and McGill University with both Music and Education Bachelor degrees has joined the Sistema program as Wind and Orchestra conductor this year. She has also taken part in the Ceremonial Guard Band program in Ottawa as musician saxophonist.

It was a fantastic and eye opening experience to spend the day with Samantha and be in the first seat to witness the dedication of the hard working staff in this program. From greeting the young musicians when they arrive on site, to preparing healthy snacks, keeping them focus on the musical instruction, teaching them about life as individual and in a group, providing a strong and organized framework for learning, the teaching staff makes all this a fun and very positive experience for the musicians.

The musical product of the ensemble’s very first combined rehearsal (Winds and Strings) would make any good highschool program envious !

I applaud and congratulate you specially , Cpl Parent for your hard work and success with the program.
